The Automotive Specialty Coatings (ASC) laboratory in Sassenheim, the Netherlands, is key to this RD&I capability, within this role a particular focus on Vehicle Refinish (VR) products.

ASC incorporates a Solutions R&D(MS) team with global responsibility for the composition, formulation, and specifications of VR products, in particular for our basecoats (both water and solvent borne lines). These are produced at multiple locations. This team is also responsible for the quality and specifications of the raw materials used in these products.

Within the context, your mission in this role is to maintain daily contact with production in order to help the team correct observed deviations in production batches. This process is initially ad hoc, but in the case of repetitions of the same type of deviation, you help us to seek structural solutions based on the formulation, test regulation or quality of the raw materials used. In addition, you help the team to develop new applications for portfolio expansion, and to perform complaint handling for the entire VR product range EMEA.

As such, this is a position for a practical and stress resistant professional who can multi-task and switch rapidly between production issues and research opportunities. In doing so you assume real responsibility and make an important contribution to the success of our global VR portfolio.

The role and its responsibilities
This full time and crucial role is based at our major site in Sassenheim, the Netherlands.
It requires you to take a constructively critical view of production and research activities as you:

  • Switch quickly, choose the best possible solution and (dare to) make a decision on the basis of minimal data;
  • Perform all kind of paint related tests (wet and dry);
  • Making paint on lab scale needed for testing;
  • Create and implement statistical set-ups;
  • Coach/instruct one or more laboratory technicians/specialists.

In order to achieve all this it is essential that you quickly become familiar with characterization techniques, e.g. mechanical and chemical techniques. You must also be able to identify trends (SQC) and the root causes (8D-RCA) of quality problems with the existing assortment. Or be willing to attend courses in this field.

At all times you maintain and promote a safe and orderly work environment and practices, compliant with all relevant policies and procedures, as we strive to achieve zero safety incidents.

Candidate profile
To apply for this position you must possess the following attributes:

  • Academic educational level (MSc or higher) in Science, preferably Chemistry or Physics, or comparable experience;
  • Ideally you have knowledge and experience of Paints a/o Coatings, with knowledge of polymer chemistry or process technology as an advantage;
  • Willing to follow various training courses in the field of paint chemistry and physics;
  • Able to make and present sub-studies;
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills including strong written and verbal Dutch and English, with any other languages such as French/German an advantage.
  • Having full color vision ( No color deficiency in eyesight)
  • Proactive, self-starter
  • Leadership skills
